"And now, as the ^apreaching of the ^bword had a great tendency to^clead the people to do that which was just—yea, it had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else, which had happened unto them—therefore Alma thought it was expedient that they should try the virtue of the word of God."

Elder M. Russell Ballard said "the pen is mightier than the sword." As we strive to follow the Lord's commandments and follow the Spirit we can be an instrument in the Lord's hands in bringing souls unto Christ. Some of the best ways to come closer to Christ is to search, ponder, and to pray about His words and the words of His servants. ("whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same." D&C 1:38) As we follow the Spirit and share appropriately the words of Christ with others and as we strive to become true followers of His words in our own lives, hearts can be softened and changed. As individuals change from the inside because of the word of Christ and govern themselves wisely, having external government is less needful.
